Formulating for Airway Inflammation: The Real Science Behind BerriQi’s PAQ+

Consumer search interest in “overactive immune system” and airway inflammation has real, sustained volume behind it. For formulators, that interest is a signal worth acting on, not a trend to chase with a vague claim. BerriQi® already has a documented mechanism and human data to back a real product built around it.

PAQ+: A Patented Complex, Not a Generic Berry Extract

BerriQi® is a whole boysenberry and apple ingredient, developed with Plant & Food Research and standardized to >15% PAQ+, a phytonutrient complex found only in BerriQi. Unlike a conventional single-compound extract, PAQ+ has been shown in mouse and in-vitro studies to shift lung immune cells from a pro-inflammatory state toward an anti-inflammatory, recovery state. It targets a specific class of immune cells in the lungs called alveolar macrophages, working with the body’s own immune system rather than suppressing it. This shift has not yet been measured in people.

The evidence behind that mechanism is substantial: 2 human trials, 6 in-vivo studies, and 6 in-vitro studies all contributing to the positive effects of BerriQi on lung and respiratiory health. In a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover ozone trial (n=20 healthy adults, 0.2 ppm ozone for 2 hours), BerriQi gave up to 13% better results than placebo at 1 hour for throat irritation and pain on deep inspiration, and 7% for shortness of breath. In another placebo-controlled trial in children aged 5 to 13 (1000mg chewable, 14 days, n=82 to 83), overall cold symptom severity fell 20% (p=0.03, per-protocol n=62). The improved breathing parameters, including enhanced inspiratory capacity, and the reduced lung fibrosis nodules come from mouse allergen models; they have not been shown in humans.

Two Doses in Anagenix User Testing

Anagenix ran two small user-testing studies in Malaysia on its own automated platform. Volunteers took BerriQi daily and completed self-reported symptom questionnaires. There was no placebo group, no blinding and no statistical analysis, and the two runs used different cohorts (n=14 at low dose for 4 weeks, n=24 at high dose for 2 weeks), so this is early directional data, not a controlled dose-response study. The table compares day-14 values:

Symptom Low dose, day 14 (n=14) High dose/day, day 14 (n=24)
Cough -37% -51%
Mucus/phlegm -41% -69%
Shortness of breath -28% -83%
Chest pain -6% -60%

At low dose, symptoms kept improving over the longer window: at week 4, cough was down 55%, mucus/phlegm 57% and shortness of breath 46%. At day 14, the high dose cohort reported larger reductions than the low dose cohort for every symptom in the table, participants reported recovering quicker, and the higher dose may be more efficacious for chest pain and headache (headache -54% vs -14%).  Because the cohorts and durations differ, this is not a head-to-head dose comparison. For a formulator, it suggests two product angles worth testing from one ingredient: a daily long-term-support format at low dose, or a higher-dose format for more acute usage, rather than a single fixed solution.

Formulation Considerations

BerriQi® is delivered as a whole-fruit powder, not an isolated anthocyanin or polyphenol extract. The anthocyanins and polyphenols in the boysenberry and apple are described as working in synergy to reduce inflammation, mucus production and collagen scarring, rather than any single compound carrying the effect on its own.

The option of 2 doses allow for a formulation flexibility and points to a range of product opportunities that can fit into a variety of finished product formats

Sourcing and Supply

BerriQi® is supplied through the same global distributor network that supplies Livaux, Feiolix, and Actazin to formulators worldwide. For a brand considering airway health, immune balance, or respiratory recovery as a category, PAQ+ is a patent-protected point of difference most competitors don’t have access to.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is PAQ+?

PAQ+ is a proprietary phytonutrient complex found only in BerriQi, developed with Plant & Food Research (now part of the Bioeconomy Science Institute Group)  from whole boysenberry and apple. BerriQi is standardized to 15% PAQ+ to ensure consistent, repeatable results batch to batch.

What doses of BerriQi have been tested?

In the clinical trials, 1600mg/day for adults and 1000mg/day for kids have been tested and reported as efficacious for symptom recovery. Anagenix’s own small, self-reported user testing in Malaysia was done at 2 additional doses – 650 mg/day and 1300 mg/day (no placebo, no blinding; n=14 for 4 weeks at 650mg, n=24 for 2 weeks at 1300mg). The lower dose showed steady improvement over 4 weeks, well suited to a long-term daily support product. The higher dose showed larger reductions over 2 weeks and may be more efficacious for chest pain and headache specifically.

Is BerriQi a single-compound extract?

No. BerriQi is a whole boysenberry and apple powder. Its anthocyanins and polyphenols are understood to work in synergy, not as a single isolated active.

What immune mechanism does BerriQi target?

In vivo and in-vitro studies, BerriQi targets alveolar macrophages, a class of immune cells in the lungs, helping shift the lung environment from a pro-inflammatory state toward an anti-inflammatory, recovery state.
